Weekly News Roundup: 29 April 2012

I know this is going up two days early, but I've got a mini-vacation this weekend to visit a friend recovering from cancer.  So, I'll post this up and be on my way out for a long weekend.

Watch Nathan Drake save the day

So, you want to enjoy the adventures of Nathan Drake but you don't have a PS3? Or, perhaps, you haven't gotten around to it yet. Well, a Reddit user by the handle of morphinapg has a solution. They have cut together all the cutscenes, along with some gameplay, to create an Uncharted movie trilogy. While some of the gameplay cuts are a bit weird, it's still pretty cool. So, if you have the inclination to watch the game as a movie, go right ahead. Each one is about a normal 2 hour movie, but Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception clocks in at over 3 hours. Just in case, each of these movies SPOIL THE WHOLE GAME, so watch at your own risk. Also, pass the popcorn! (via Kotaku)

The brain drain to mobile developers is worrysome

Cue the “JRPGs are dead!” cries. Square Enix has lost a few directors in the last few months. While they were not the names/faces fans associate with Square games, they were part of the next generation and were heads of their departments. Ryuji Ikeda worked on Dissidia: Final Fantasy as the lead programmer; Shouta Shimoda was planning director of Dissidia 012; and the biggest loss was Takeshi Arakawa who was in textures for Kingdom Hearts, supervisor on Dissidia, and graphical director on the currently unreleased Final Fantasy Versus XII. All three have taken new jobs at studios that focus on mobile games. Brain drains like this are difficult for studios to overcome, so here's hoping Square Enix has some others in the pipeline. Restructuring at the multitude of EA studios continues

Mega=publisher Electronic Arts continues to “restructure” and trim staff levels. The move was hinted at last week, but so far it hasn't been the large scale layoffs that were rumored. The big cuts recently have been at EA Montreal where up to 50 staffers may be let go. An EA statement said that many would be moved to other projects, but a small number would be “let go.” Best of luck to those now out of the workforce. (via Destructoid)

Next year will be better!  Right?

Sluggish sales on hardware, the awful debut of the 3DS, and the price cut on the 3DS were major contributors to Nintendo posting it's first annual loss as a public company. A strong Yen versus the dollar hasn't helped. Last year, Nintendo posted operating losses at $455.9 million. They are hopeful for a turnaround on the 3DS, which is currently sold under cost, and a strong launch for the Wii U. Nintendo hopes that this year will see nearly all the losses this year turned to profits. Good luck with that, Nintendo. Sincerely, good luck. (via Kotaku)

Over a year to find the breach?  Awww yeah!

MMO studio Cryptic, known for Perfect World and Star Trek Online, just found out that someone hacked user information. The breach occurred in December 2010, yet the company just found out about it this week. The suspected victims were notified by Cryptic and they offered assurances that only the handle, user name and password were cracked. Right, so with those the hacker could have accessed the account information which had billing addresses, birthdays, and partial credit card numbers. Cryptic is assuring customers that no personal information was stolen to their knowledge, but if they missed the initial intrusion, how many others could have happened? *Sigh Time to change passwords on that account again. Save the internet from Zerg "O" s!  Where's Raynor when we need him?

Want a little Diable III practice? Go to Google, search “zerg rush” and have fun! (via Joystiq)
