News Roundup: 11 December 2011

The weekly news roundup is here!  A few interesting stories and the VGA winners after the jump.  I'm also including the reveal trailers from the VGAs.  Some interesting stuff there, especially a Bioware Command and Conquer, Alan Wake: American Nightmare and The Last of Us by Naughty Dog.  Some cool stuff.  Also, if you can, donate to Child's Play!

More issues at Team Ico...

Well, this is unsettling. First, we have reports that Fumito Ueda (Team Ico's founder) has left Sony. Now we learn that the executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama on The Last Guardian has left for UK's Bossa Studios. That's a lot of high-ranking folks leaving a project that has been in development for over 4 years. While Ueda has stayed with the project, it appears that Hayama is gone (see the full press release in the link). I was a bit worried about The Last Guardian before, but now it's full-blown trepidation. (via Joystiq)

That's two of three!

Another of the Wii's final games, and a good looking RPG to boot, is confirmed for Europe. The Last Story, made by Final Fantasy creator and head of Mistwalker Studios Hironobu Sakaguchi, is due in Europe this coming February. Out of Operation Rainfall's three targets, two have now been confirmed (though no US date has been set for Last Story, but we'll probably see it anyhow). That just leaves the more obscure Pandora's Tower without any release outside of Japan. If Last Story comes to the States, that will be another good JRPG worth checking out. (via Joystiq)

Miyamoto and friends

Shigeyu Miyamoto, Mr Mario/Zelda/Nintendo himself, has said in an interview with Wired that he's “retiring from [his] current position” within the company. Panic ensued that the man behind nearly all Nintendo's success (and most of my childhood toys) would leave and then...what? Doom? Destruction? Plagues of locusts? He's the creative force, but he also has many developers to work with and train. He has said that he wants to mentor the younger/next generation of Nintendo minds and help them find their way. Losing such a creative mind would be damaging, sure. But there are many new faces that could be the next Miyamoto waiting for their time to shine. Nintendo said as much while clarifying the comments, and that should alleviate most fears. I'm sure the man behind Mario will be a fixture in the industry for many years to come. Free (or super cheap) DLC?  Yes, please!

Fans of Bastion are getting free/cheap DLC for Christmas! The Narrator fleshes out his backstory in an arena “Who Knows Where” room. There is also a Casual mode (once you get a New Game +) to just enjoy the game's story. It will be free for PC/Chrome gamers and cost 80 MS Points ($1) for XBLA folks. Guess it's time to fire up the 360 again. Bastion is totally worth it, and this is a pretty cool bonus!
