News Roundup: 25 December 2011

A day late from the holidays, but here are a few news stories that caught my eye over the week of Christmas.  See you all next week for the Game of the Year list!

GotY Lists Begin!
Here are the major sites' Games of the Year lists! Look for mine on 31 December!

Naughty Dog, a personal favorite studio of mine, talks to Eurogamer about the transition between one generation of hardware and the next. It's rough to see terms like “dark days” and “terrifying” used by folks that have arguably made games that are standouts on the hardware. We can only hope that the studio has learned from the past transitions and does well this next round. (via Eurogamer)

Once again, the lack of a “Mature” rating (Australia tops out at M+15, which doesn't cover the “ultra violent” stuff) means that Australia won't get another game. This time, it's Syndicate. The parliament has a bill to add a rating for games deemed unfit for the under-18 crowd, but it won't go into effect in time for this one. Maybe next year? (via Game Informer)

Not raiding corporations in Australia

Wow, this is nuts. Lots of Reddit users have started compiling data from runes on bug jars that lead to...the annihilation of the world? No joke. It's all here but the TL;DR version is “Runes on bug jars lead to towers which form a pentagram which leads to more places that form a circle which has an alter at the center.” Thus, if the alter is used somehow, we get the apocalypse. Yep. The game is that deep and has the lore to support things like this. Cheers, Bethesda, especially if something comes of this. Do I smell DLC? (via Game Informer)

The Reddit-found 'transmutation circle'

GameStop called it's customers with pre-orders for Sony's The Last Guardian and informed them that the game had been cancelled by the vendor.  It sounded like Christmas had been cancelled for those of us eagerly awaiting the third (and last) game from Team Ico.  Sony quickly countered that the game was still coming and GameStop (finally) gave a lame excuse: the game had no "firm" release date so it was removed from the system until it has one.  I know (from working there) that there are tons of games without a firm release date that are in the system.  This all was silly in the end, as the game is still coming.  But man, it was terrible to hear that recorded lady saying that the game wasn't coming... Down but not out, apparently
