News Roundup: 5 February 2012

Oh boy, the end of the fiscal year.  The time when taxes, corporate earnings reports and lots of red ink are spilled out.  Today shows a few awesome stories, so sad ones and two gaming franchises predicting the Superbowl.  So let's get to it!

Guiness World Record set? Check. Future of online games? Maybe. Madness? Most certainly. (via Kotaku)

Social game giant has faced accusations that it has blatantly copied games in the past. Now, two new accusations have come about. Developer Nimblebit says that their Tiny Tower was ripped off by Zynga. Now Buffalo Studios comes forward with a side-by-side comparison of their Bingo Blitz and Zynga's Zynga Bingo. It's a shame that indie developers have to fight mega-developers to protect their IP. And it's a shame that most of the time, the little guy loses. And here is Zynga's response. Though Zynga is taking a lot of heat, there are defenders of the giant. The writers at Kill Screen have an article about how cloning ideas (while not illegal is kinda shady) is good for the industry, but stealing ideas is wrong. A fan-made Pokemon fighter is in beta. If you follow the link above, you can see a video of the game in action and find a link to the beta! Here's the beta link, too. It's all in Japanese, but Chrome has a translator if you need it. Check it out! (via Game Informer)

As companies start reporting their end of the year numbers, there have been some serious losses and others not so bad. Sony (link in title) is reporting a loss of $2.9 billion (USD). This might be connected to the sluggish sales of the Vita. Joining Sony in posting large losses is THQ. THQ has been axing jobs pretty liberally lately, and now comes news that the CEO and Board of Directors are all taking pay cuts. The company's stock was even delisted, a real blow to long term survivability. The red ink at THQ is worrisome for titles like Homefront 2 and the MMO tied to the Warhammer 40,000 IP, and comes after repeated rumors of the entire gaming slate being canceled (mentioned last week). Next, we have Capcom, who report that net sales are down %29. They have not had great press lately, especially after fan anger over the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 on the 3DS, and Mega Man being absent in Marvel VS Capcom 3. Their sole bright spot has been Monster Hunter which continues to sell amazingly well in Japan. It's not all doom and gloom, though. Konami is posting %77 increase in year-over sales. Square Enix also has positive news to report thanks to successes like Deus Ex: Human Revolution and others. (via Joystiq)

*Sigh*  Here we go again.  Another argument that killing virtual people/things makes you immediately run out and do it in real life.  Let's tax it!  (via Joystiq)

As it is every year, the king (and only) American Football game in town has simulated the Superbowl. We'll see later today if the NY Giants can again upset the Patriots. In Madden NFL 12, MVP Eli Manning led the Giants to a 27 – 24 win. The game winning field came as time expired, and the link above has a recap video to watch. Let's see if life imitates art this evening. They have a hell of a track record. And, if Madden, isn't your thing, you can always see what Skyrim says. (via Game Informer and 1Up)
