30 Days of Gaming: Day 11

Day 11 - Favorite Gaming Couple

Oh, so hard to choose!  Here are a few since I cannot make up my mind. Like the last couple, there are MASSIVE SPOILERS ahead, just in case.

Tidus and Yuna (Final Fantasy X): They were so cute!  One of the few FF couples that actually profess their love and the only one I can think of that actually did anything about it.  These two have an amazing courtship (the “Laugh with me” scene notwithstanding) and since both know they are living on borrowed time, they enjoy every moment together. Their love story has various shades of romance, too.  It's at once "Romeo and Juliet" (timeless), 'puppy love' (awkward) and endearing.  They are probably one of the best written couples in gaming, and watching their affection grow is touching.

Tidus and Yuna share a kiss (and more?)

Welkin and Alicia (Valkyria Chronicles):  These two were thrust into war and suffered the horrors together. Welkin is a scholarly type with no desire to fight, but does so for his country's sake.  Alicia is a baker who was part of the town guard when it was attacked.  They are just two young adults in a trying situation.  Alicia falls first, and is rebuffed by Welkin's aloofness.  Welkin cannot find the right way to say what he's feeling, and his attempts are usually comically bad.  Eventually, they share a moment that not only shows their budding love and affection for one another, but also how even in war, love survives.

Alisha and Welkin realize their love

Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher (Uncharted series):  A rogue and a plucky reporter?  In love?   Preposterous!  It's silly, cliched and expected, but I'll be damned if it isn't amazing.  Their love blossomed after Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (a la Speed) and hints dropped in Uncharted 2 that it was passionate, but like any fling, over too soon.  It is one of the great threads in the overarching Uncharted story. The fact that Elena can banter with Nate and match him on an intellectual level as well as in combat has him smitten. His charm and devil-may-care attitude has her falling despite herself.  All of that is brought to a head at the end of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.  The heartbreaking worry followed by the ending that brought a tear to my eye.  The love between them is best fleshed out in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.  We're given insight into why their clear affection for each other is damaged by Nate's nature and yet they keep coming back to each other.

The ending to Among Thieves.  MASSIVE SPOILERS

The most touching scene between them (with a dumb song over it)

Kane and Lynch (Kane & Lynch series):  Silly, I know, but these two are just too much.  One is an asshole looking for redemption, and the other is a psychopath in need of massive amounts of medication.   Yet, through all the bullets and bodies and double-dealings, these two remain if not friends, then allies.  It's touching really, that when the world goes to hell, you have one person to rely on...even if he's nuts, he's better than nothing.
