Review: Space Chem

Space Chem
PC (Steam)
Publisher: Zachtronics Industries
Developer: Zachtronics Industries
Release Date: 2 March 2011

Every now and then, an Indie title comes along that does nothing by the books and isn't afraid to be a niche title. Last year saw the release of a title like that: Space Chem. Games like this are so much more than the description as a “Casual, Indie” title with “Over fifty mind-bending puzzles” as Steam has it. Some folks would see the “Casual” bit and keep on walking. Or, they might be intrigued by it and think, “Yeah, I like Bejeweled!” Both options would be mistakes. This game is like nothing you've ever played. And it is strangely and awesomely addictive for it.

Review: Journey

Journey
PSN
Publisher: Sony Santa Monica
Developer: thatgamecompany
Release Date: 13 March 2012

What is there to say about Journey? Sometimes a game comes along that does more than just raise pulses. While plenty of games can excite and have players mainline adrenaline with bombastic set-pieces and summer movie production values, few games try for other feelings. Many games are all about the cinema experience and aping movies. Games exist that cover the science fiction genre, the pulp action genre, the noir genre. There are not any that aim to reproduce poetry or the Zen-like calm of mediation. Auteur gaming studio thatgamecompany has always broken away from convention. While they have only created three titles, each has brought the company closer to creating “art” than “games.” Journey, their third title, pushes buttons gamers may not realize that they have. Journey is something more than mere “game.”

Review: Hot Shots Golf - World Invitational

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational
PS Vita
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Clap Hanz
Release Date: 14 February 2012

As as staple of Sony systems, the Hot Shots series has always been about accessibility. The entire series takes a casual approach to sports, and it makes for fun gaming. The golf series features courses that are just a bit fantastical, characters that are type-casts out of anime movies, and mechanics that everyone can easily pick up, but that take time to master. Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational offers that familiar and simplistic golf action on your Vita. Those that love the series know what they are in for, but folks on the outside may not “get it.”

Review: Unit 13

Unit 13
PS Vita
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Zipper Interactive
Release Date: 6 March 2012

The Vita has two analog sticks. This fixes one of the major complaints about third-person shooters on the PSP: that the controls were wonky or ineffective. Despite the PSP's limitations, Zipper Interactive saw great success with their SOCOM series. Visions of a proper military shooter were realized with the announcement of Unit 13. Here was Zipper with the chance to show off how good a portable shooter could be. And they succeeded. Mostly.

Review: Uncharted - Golden Abyss

Uncharted: Golden Abyss
PS Vita
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Sony Bend
Release Date: 14 February 2012

Daring adventurer and mystery solver Nathan Drake has been busy lately. His blockbuster adventure in November, Drake's Deception, was another successful entry in the franchise. To make sure that the PS Vita had a “core franchise” at launch, Naughty Dog handed their boy over to the folks at Sony Bend. It's always a gamble to have another studio take on a beloved franchise, but with Naughty Dog consulting, Golden Abyss has every chance to be a solid entry in the series. What we got was akin to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Review: Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XIII-2
PS3 (reviewed), Xbox 360
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Release Date: 31 January 2012

JRPGs have suffered this console generation. The heavy hitters in the genre have moved to hand-helds (like Dragon Quest IX) or were met with fan backlash and derision (like Final Fantasy XIII). The problems facing XIII-2 were daunting: the original was blasted for being too linear, not having shops, taking way to long to open up into the larger world, having a weak story/characters (I disagree on this point) and having a battle system that was innovative, but also frustrating. The producer of the game, Yoshinori Kitase, promised to rectify the issues fans raised about the first game and deliver a sequel that not only made apologies for the first game, but expanded and improved on the game. I was worried, but after playing through, I can safely say, “Apology accepted, Square Enix.”

Review: AMY

Amy
PSN (reviewed), XBLA, PC
Publisher: Lexis Numerique
Developer: Vector Cell
Release Date: 17 January 2012 (11 January 2012 on XBLA)

The key to any good survival horror game is the terror and fear that they produce. Characters in situations that are far beyond their control and horrific monsters are the order of the day. But the truly special horror games don't put us in control of highly trained police officers, mercenaries or other folks that can handle this sort situation. No, the special ones put us in the shoes of average folks forced to do the extraordinary to survive. Silent Hill did this (more than a few times), Siren does this and so does Alan Wake. Amy tries, but is is encumbered with so many faults that it isn't worthy of being mentioned with the best of the best.

Review: Saint's Row: The Third

Saint's Row: The Third
PS3 (reviewed), Xbox 360, PC
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Volition, INC
Release Date: 15 November 2011

Do you remember when Grand Theft Auto first went into the 3D space? The games were parodies of popular culture and famous mafia movies. The series got more crazy with Vice City and the send-up of the excesses of the 1980s. And finally, the over-the-top look at 'gangstas' in San Andres. The games were all about the crazy, sociopath main characters inciting violence across town in tanks and skydiving into gun fights. Then it got serious. Volition, INC, makers of the Saint's Row series, started off imitating, but then realized that one of the major draws to open-world crime games is the overblown action. This brings us to their crowning achievement: Saint's Row: The Third.

Review: L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire
PS3 (reviewed), Xbox 360, PC
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Team Bondi
Release Date: 17 May 2011

Can you read people? Can you, with only a glance, tell if someone is lying? What hides behind furtive glances and not-quite-meeting-your-eye looks? Great detectives and policemen do this routine every day. They work with witnesses and interrogate suspects to piece together what happened. Searching crime scenes for clues and confronting someone with facts that counter their lies is compelling stuff. It's an exciting battle of wits; where thoroughness in your preparation wins the day. This cerebral cat-and-mouse game is the basis for Team Bondi's and Rockstar's L.A. Noire. More detective drama than game it nonetheless takes players on an amazing interactive journey through the gritty and rough streets of a faithfully recreated 1940s Los Angeles.

Review: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Wii
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: 20 November 2011

Nintendo has made a fortune over the years between Mario and Zelda. The franchises newest entries are always eagerly awaited and fans flock to stores to buy them at launch. Zelda enters it's 25th year with an entry built from the ground up for the Wii: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Since this will be the swan song of the Wii, I figured it was as good of time as any to finally experience a Zelda title. So, having no nostalgia-driven memories of saving Hyrule, nor a deep seeded loathing of Gannon to spur me onward, I delved into Skyward Sword and the world of Zelda for the first time. The experience turned out to be one of the best I've ever played.

Review: Sanctum

Sanctum
PC (Steam Version)
Publisher: Coffee Stain Studios
Developer: Coffee Stain Studios
Release Date: 15 April 2011

Tower defense games are an old genre, but one that's seen a resurgence of late. Thanks to simple controls and ideas, nearly anyone can pick up and play one of these games. As such, the field is getting crowded and titles have to do a bit more to stand out from the pack. One way of doing just that is mash up two game styles and make a new one. Sanctum mixes up the tower defense with FPS action. But, is it a solid mix?

Review: Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
PS3
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 1 November 2011

How do you follow up a nearly unanimous Game of the Year winner? Expectations are through the roof. Do you go bigger? Do you change it up? Do you leave well enough alone and take baby steps? The pressure Naughty Dog must have felt after Uncharted: Among Thieves won multiple Game of the Year honors (amazing considering it's a PS3 exclusive) must have been nearly crushing. Two years later, we have our answer. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is here and it doesn't disappoint.

Review: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
PS3
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 13 October 2009

After a solid, if flawed, opening act, Naughty Dog brings a sequel that not only surpasses its predecessor, but damn near redefines the genre. Expectations were high, given the studio's pedigree, but I don't think anyone outside of the Naughty Dog office saw this coming. Among Thieves is not only worthy of the multiple Game of the Year awards it won, but it's a game that every PS3 owner should have in their collection. Simply put, Among Thieves is a classic.

That's a long way down...

Review: Costume Quest

Costume Quest
PSN, XBLA, PC
Publisher: THQ

Halloween is a special time of year, especially for children. Thoughts of candy, jack-o-lanterns, candy, costumes, candy, creepy parties, and candy dominate the month leading up to the special night. You know, this kind of Halloween. The talented folks at Double Fine used this magical holiday to set up a grand adventure that children and adults can enjoy. The DLG (downloadable game) Costume Quest brings us back to a time when Halloween was a night where anything could happen.

Review: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
PS3
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 16 November 2007

Tomb raiding is something gamers have enjoyed since Lara Croft introduced the concept to us back in 1996. The old adventuring through forgotten tombs and ancient catacombs has gotten stale, though. Lara had become less appealing and her games have fallen from grace. The genre needed a fresh hero and a game worthy to succeed Tomb Raider. Someone dashing, heroic, suave but also easy to relate to. That someone was Nathan Drake and that game was Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Review: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Eidos Montreal
Release Date: 23 August 2011

Blade Runner fans, rejoice! The cyber-punk genre finally gets it's due in an action-packed, choice-laden package that not only pays homage to the PC Game of the Year (2000) that spawned the franchise, but adds modern gaming conventions and accessibility for fans new and returning. It's a game that not only balances its roots with the advances made in the last 10 years, but it also carves out its own identity.

Heng Sha is so pretty!

Scoring System for Reviews

Ratings scale

10 – Must buy, must play, must own period. A classic in every sense of the word
9 – Amazing, wonderful. A game that only a few minor things keep it from being a 10.
8 – Solid and well done. A game that really belongs in your library, blemishes and all.
7 – Great. This is a game that you'll enjoy, but maybe have to meet certain requirements (love of the IP or concept)
6 – Good. These are not bad games by any stretch, but maybe it's not for everyone.
5 – Alright, OK. A game that you really should be a fan of to get, otherwise you might be disappointed.
4 – Meh, so-so. A game that just doesn't run on all cylinders. Maybe game play or bugs hold it back.
3 – Bad, terrible. A game that can't overcome it's own faults.
2 – Oh boy... A game that really shouldn't have been released into the wild.
1 – Why bother. A game that is flawed top to bottom and is an affront to have on the shelf.

One of the things I want to do is use the entire scale. It seems that most “blockbuster” titles rarely fall below an 8. Heck, look at IGN and you'll see that %90 of the games fall into the 8 to 9 range. That's their system, and it works for them. But, I see comments all the time saying, “But this game got the same score and it sucked in my opinion.” That's what I'm here to do. Offer alternatives. Other sites will rate games and a majority will fall into the top 1/3 or bottom 1/3 of the scale. That's fine and looks good on Metacritic (or bad, in the latter case). From my perspective, anything above a 5 is worth looking into. Maybe rent 5s and 6s before buying, or look for them used or on sale. I shall point out that 5s are by no means “avoid at all costs!” They are just games that really have a lot of criteria to meet before the full thumbs up.
