Could this concept be the PS4? No...but still it's pretty! |
Rumors have begun swirling about the new Playstation. Possibly due out in 2013, the project finally has a code-name: Orbis. Orbis, meaning "orbit" or "circle", joins the Vita in a Latin-themed naming trend (insert Lion King "Circle of Life" jokes here). The disturbing bit, still unconfirmed, is that the Orbis and Durango (the new Xbox) will have some sort of "anti-used game system." Right now, that seems to be locking a game to one specific user, and then requiring others to purchase the equivalent of an online pass. This might be the natural extension of the online passes we've seen this generation. I would hope that if this is the direction that both giants go, that it ties a game to a system, not tag. It would be unfair to households with multiple gamers to shell out extra even if they have only one console. We'll see where this goes, since it is all unconfirmed thus far. (via Kotaku)
Indie Developer Says Kojima is “Terrible” at Making Games
Auteur, sure. Weird, definintly. Terrible at making games? Uhhh... |
Man, indie developers sure do like mouthing off to Japan. After the GDC incident with Phil Fish saying "You suck" to Japanese developers after a panel, we have this gem. Tyrone Rodriguez, producer at Nicalis, takes a shot at Hideo Kojima and Konami. Rodriguez says the Metal Gear series is good "despite" the influence of Kojima and that Konami has been putting out garbage for a while. I'll agree to the last, but really. Let's see if we can be constructive in criticism instead of childish, eh? (via Destructoid)
Zipper Interactive is No More
As I mentioned last week, Zipper Interactive (the folks behind SOCOM and Unit 13) were rumored to be shut down. That became reality late last week as part of a "normal" shift in Sony World Wide Studios. While some of their recent games failed to gain much traction, it's never good to write about layoffs. Best of luck to those now job hunting! (via Game Informer)
Cheers, Zipper. Thanks for the memories. |

Kellee Santiago, co-founder of thatgamecompany, announced her departure from the indie studio. She
and a few other team members have left, but they have not announced what their new direction shall be yet. thatgamecompany will move forward under co-founder Jenova Chen and they have already hinted at a new project that will span multiple consoles. Best of luck to Ms Santiago and the others in their new endeavors, and I'm sure they will continue to shape the industry in amazing ways. (via Eurogamer)

Capcom's Street Fighter guru, Yoshinori Ono, has been hospitalized in Korea after an event. While it wasn't life threatening, the company announced that Ono would be taking some time off and scaling back his duties for a bit. Ono has been behind the resurgence of the 2D fighters with Street Fighter IV and the recent Street Fighter X Tekken. I'm sure that the promotional and professional stresses related to these games finally caught up with him. Here's to a speedy recovery, Ono-san! (via Game Informer)
Again, it's never fun to write about layoffs, and these are huge. Sega has announced a major restructuring that includes job losses and games cancelled. They are focusing on a few core titles (including Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marine) and letting everything else fall by the wayside. This dashes my hopes for a digital release/translation of Valkyria Chronicles 3. I hope that Sega can right the ship and get back on track. And best of luck to the former Sega folks looking for work.
